Binaural beats
What Are Binaural Beats? A Simple Guide
Binaural beats are a sound effect that happens inside your head. Each ear hears a slightly different tone, and your brain hears the difference as a soft, slow pulse.
How binaural beats work
Put on headphones. Your left ear hears a tone at 200 Hz. Your right ear hears a tone at 210 Hz. Neither tone has a beat in it. But your brain combines them and hears a gentle "wah-wah" pulse at the difference: 10 Hz.
That 10 Hz pulse is the binaural beat. It isn't in the air, only in how your brain processes the two sounds. That's why you need stereo headphones: on a speaker, both ears hear both tones and the effect disappears.
Why the beat frequency matters
Brain activity can be measured as waves at different speeds, called brainwave bands. Binaural beats are usually set to match one of them:
| Band | Speed | Usually linked to |
|---|---|---|
| Delta | 0.5–4 Hz | Deep sleep |
| Theta | 4–7 Hz | Deep meditation, dreamy states |
| Alpha | 8–12 Hz | Relaxed but awake |
| Beta | 13–30 Hz | Focus and alertness |
| Gamma | 30–100 Hz | High concentration |
The idea, often called "brainwave entrainment", is that listening to a beat in one band may gently nudge your brain toward that state. Read more in our guide to Delta, Theta, Alpha, Beta and Gamma.
What does the research say?
Honest answer: promising, but mixed. Some small studies found that binaural beats helped people feel calmer, relax before a medical procedure or sleep a little better. Other studies found little or no effect. Results seem to depend on the person, the frequency, the volume and how long you listen.
What almost everyone agrees on: calm sound, headphones, a quiet room and 10–30 minutes of doing nothing else is a good way to relax. Binaural beats are one more tool for that, not magic.
How to try binaural beats
- Use headphones. Any stereo pair is fine.
- Keep the volume low. The beat works quietly and should never feel loud.
- Pick a goal: sleep (Delta), meditation (Theta), relaxing (Alpha) or focus (Beta).
- Listen for 10–30 minutes, sitting or lying down.
- Try it a few times. Many people notice more after a few sessions than after the first.
Binaural beats or meditation music?
Pure binaural beats can sound technical: a steady hum. Many people prefer meditation music with a soft binaural layer underneath, so they get calm music and the beat together. Synawake has both: pure tones for headphone purists, and music sessions with piano, singing bowls and chants.

Do binaural beats work without headphones?
No. Each ear has to hear its own tone, so you need stereo headphones or earbuds. On a speaker the beat disappears.
Are binaural beats safe?
For most people, yes, at a low volume. Don't use them while driving, and ask your doctor first if you have epilepsy or a seizure disorder.
How long should I listen to binaural beats?
Start with 10 to 30 minutes. For sleep, many people let a longer session play while they fall asleep.
Synawake is relaxation and focus music, not a medical treatment. It does not diagnose, treat or cure any condition. Don't listen while driving or operating machines. If you have epilepsy, a seizure disorder or a heart condition, ask your doctor before using binaural beats. If sleep problems or anxiety last a long time, please talk to a doctor or therapist.
