Binaural Beats for Sleep: Delta Waves and How to Use Them

If your body is tired but your mind won't switch off, slow sound can help you wind down. Here is how to use binaural beats for sleep in a simple, safe way.

Which frequency is best for sleep?

Deep sleep is linked to Delta waves, the slowest brainwave band (0.5–4 Hz). Most sleep sessions use a Delta beat, for example 2.5 Hz. For the time before you fall asleep, some people like to start with Theta (4–7 Hz), the drowsy, dreamy band.

A good pattern: Theta while you settle down, Delta once you're in bed with the lights off.

A simple bedtime routine

  1. Put screens away 20–30 minutes before bed, or at least turn the brightness down.
  2. Lie down, headphones on, volume low. You should barely notice the beat.
  3. Choose a long, calm session (30–60 minutes), so nothing ends with sudden silence.
  4. Breathe slowly: in for 4, out for 6. Let the music do the rest.
  5. Use a sleep timer if you don't want sound all night.

Headphones for sleeping

Big over-ear headphones are uncomfortable on a pillow. Softer options are sleep headphones built into a headband, or small flat earbuds. They must be stereo, so each ear gets its own tone.

Music or pure tones?

Many people find a pure tone too "technical" at night. Sleep music with a soft Delta layer underneath feels warmer: slow piano, rain, deep pads and a quiet hummed Om. Synawake's sleep sessions, like Night Without Fear and Cosmic Sleep, are made this way.

What to expect

Binaural beats are not a sleeping pill. Studies are small and results differ from person to person. What they can do is give your mind something slow and steady to follow instead of your thoughts. Used every night, that routine is often what helps most.
